DNA Proof of Inbreeding in Cavalier King Charles Spaniels

Have you wondered if Cavaliers are inbred or not?
Yes, they are all highly inbred.

These two AKC registered purebred Cavaliers pictured are not even considered inbred within the CKCS world of options. Yes, inbreeding gets much worse in most Cavaliers. Loretta is 32% DNA tested COI from Embark and 29% diverse on Wisdom Optimal Selection. Jasper is 33% COI from Embark. Both Laboklin and Wisdom Panel OS test for heterozygosity and he gets a poor score of 26% and 27%. All these percentages signal that Cavaliers are inbred.

Pedigrees of Cavaliers regularly show low inbreeding like COI 1%-5%.
Why?
Because the COI is a mathematical equation using only recent generations and not including the founders. The problem is that the founders of the breed are just a handful of dogs and all Cavaliers are more closely related than full siblings.

DNA testing has proven that all Cavaliers are more inbred than full siblings and most are the equivalent of two generations of pairing of full siblings. That makes them highly inbred. The compounded inbreeding since the invention of the breed in the late 1920’s has lead to rampant health issues. It has also lead to consistent sweet gentle personalities. Perhaps they are sweet and gentle due to being sick, in pain and low IQ due to the rampant inbreeding?
